Fotis Kontoglou was one of the most important creative artists of the 1930s Generation and his work left its mark on the spiritual and artistic life of Greece for many decades. Though he expressed himself mainly through painting, he also left some important writings. In 1923 he made his first visit to Mount Athos, a visit that was to make a prοfound impression on him and prove to be the most important turning point in his artistic career. ‘What I need to say here is that I didn’t expect to find such a perfect art in the monasteries’ churches’, he wrote that year in the publication The Art of Athos, in which he presented copies of works he had made during his stay in the Athonite monasteries.
The exhibition organised by the Mount Athos Center aims to highlight the special relationship that this great artist had with the Athonite State, one that lasted throughout his life and was a constant source of spiritual and artistic inspiration.

On Tuesday 24 June 2025, at 8 p.m., the exhibition of painting entitled ‘Giorgos Taxidis. Mount Athos: Land of Silence’ will be officially opened in the exhibition space of the Mount Athos Center.

In recent years a fruitful collaboration has developed between the Holy Metropolis of Grevena and the Mount Athos Center. Every year, during Great Lent, the Mount Athos Center stages an art exhibition in the Metropolis’s Cultural Center. Father Christos Kourtis, who is in charge of the Metropolis’s catechetical schools and youth activities, undertakes the organisation of visits and educational programmes.

On Sunday 30 March 2025 the group photography exhibition entitled ‘Easter on Mount Athos’ was officially opened in Itea. The exhibition was first presented in Thessaloniki in 2024, in the exhibition space of the Mount Athos Center, as part of the programme of events organised by the Municipality of Thessaloniki for its 2024 ’Devotional Week’.
This year the Mount Athos Center is once again participating in the events of the ‘Devotional Week’ festival organised by the Municipality of Thessaloniki by staging a photography exhibition entitled ‘The Scene of the Unseen: Mount Athos by Tomasz Mościcki’.
The exhibition will be officially opened on Tuesday 8 April, at 18.30, by the Mayor of Thessaloniki and President of the Board of Directors of the Mount Athos Center, Mr. Stelios Angeloudis.

Exhibition of historic photographs
November 29 - December 31, 2024
The Mount Athos Center, in collaboration with the Department of Art and Archaeology of Princeton University, the Youth Center of the Holy Metropolis of Lefkas and Ithaca, and the Municipality of Lefkas, presents an exhibition of historic photographs from an expedition undertaken on Mount Athos and Meteora in 1929 by three traveller-artists from Princeton.
The exhibition will be officially opened by His Eminence Theophilos, Metropolitan of Lefkas and Ithaca, at 19:30 on Friday 29 November 2024 at the ‘Theodoros Stamos’ Art Gallery of the Municipality of Lefkas (Marka Square, Lefkas Town).
