Programme of activities and events

This year marks the two hundredth anniversary of the beginning of the Greek Revolution of 1821. As is well known, the outbreak of the Greek Revolution in Macedonia and particularly in Chalkidiki profoundly stirred the Athonites, who, after a jubilant gathering at the Church of the Protaton in May 1821, decided to join the revolutionary movement of Emmanuel Pappas

Seeking to play an active part in the nationwide anniversary celebrations, the Mount Athos Center has decided to organise a programme of activities and events with the aim of presenting this unique but relatively unknown aspect of Athonite history and of promoting a greater knowledge of the historical reality on Mount Athos during the Greek Revolution.

For the organisation of these commemorative events a special Organising Committee has been set up with the following composition:

Chairman
Kriton Chryssochoidis, Honorary Director, Institute of Historical Research, National Research Foundation

Members
Elder Symeon Dionysiates, First Vice-President, Board of Directors of the Mount Athos Center
Hieromonk Philotheos of Koutloumousiou, Ordinary member of the Board of Directors of the Mount Athos Center
