Mount Athos is a unique place, with a history spanning a thousand years, and has rightly been described as the ‘Ark of Orthodoxy’. At the same time, the Athos peninsula is a remarkable natural monument, since the monks’ way of life, their care for the environment, their seclusion, and the absence of activities that could harm it (such as the excessive use of cars, or the establishment of small and large industries), have created the conditions for the protection and preservation of the unique Athonite ecosystem.

The event we are co-organising with the Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) aims primarily to highlight the uniqueness of the natural environment, as well as to showcase the important work the members of the Association have carried out for decades. Twice annually they travel to Mount Athos to clean the pathways, ensuring that pilgrims are able to make use of them. [...]
