Day conference and photography exhibition
12 September 2025
On Friday 12 September 2025, at the Thessaloniki History Centre (Billis Building, Ippodromiou Square), the Mount Athos Center, in collaboration with the UK-based Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA), is organising two events devoted to the unique biodiversity and natural environment of Mount Athos.

From 17:00 – 21:00 the conference entitled ‘Mount Athos: A unique monument of nature’ will be held, with the participation of leading researchers and members of the Friends of Mount Athos who for decades have been working to clear and improve the footpaths on Mount Athos. The topics presented will include the following: the landscape, flora and fauna, and fungal diversity of Mount Athos; the management of Athos’s forests and footpaths; the origin of the black pine on Athos, and the contemporary challenges faced by the Athonite landscape, with an open discussion on its future and preservation.
DAY CONFERENCE SHEDULE
At 21:00 the conference will be followed by the official opening of the photography exhibition, also entitled ‘Mount Athos: A unique monument of nature’. Through thematic units like Natural Landscapes and Ecosystems, The Patina of Time, and The Friends of Mount Athos In Action, the exhibition captures not only the rare beauty and spirituality of the place but also the systematic work carried out by the Friends of Mount Athos to care for and improve the ancient footpaths.
The exhibition will be held from 12 September until 3 October 2025 at the Thessaloniki History Centre (visiting hours: Monday-Friday, 08:00 – 15:00).
Through these two initiatives the Mount Athos Center and the UK-based Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) are seeking to increase public awareness of the environmental, cultural and spiritual dimensions of Mount Athos and to initiate a dialogue on how to achieve viable methods of preserving and managing its natural environment in the future. This year’s events have a commemorative character as they mark the 25th anniversary of the commencement of the Mount Athos Center’s activities and the 25th year of the operation of the Friends of Mount Athos’s path-clearing programme.
