Online Conference

Friday 27, Saturday 28 & Sunday 29 November 2020.

Continuing the tradition, the Mount Athos Center will be holding its Fifth International Scientific Workshop this year, the papers for which comprise essentially the annual meeting of the scientific community which is engaged in researching Mount Athos.
We take a profound sense of satisfaction from the success of the previous Scientific Workshops, a satisfaction emanating mostly from the achievement of our central objective: to develop fruitful genuine academic discourse. This discourse enriches and broadens debate on Athonite research, thus contributing to a more comprehensive presentation of its findings. The dynamism of earlier workshops continues unabated also for this year’s Fifth Workshop, this being evident from the expression of intense interest in participating on the part of a large number of researchers, both from Greece and abroad. This fact underlines the bright outlook that the annual International Scientific Workshop of the Mount Athos Center as a multidisciplinary institution for showcasing Athonite research is here to stay.

The adverse conditions which have emerged this year as a result of the pandemic, COVID-19, have not permitted us to hold the Scientific Workshop in the usual way, that is, with face-to-face communication. However, so that these Workshops and our contact may continue, we have decided to undertake the proceedings of the Fifth Scientific Workshop online, giving the chance both to researchers to present their works, and to audiences to follow research developments.
We are certain that despite the challenging circumstances, the participants’ papers will be as equally important as in previous years. Indeed this becomes apparent from the programme we have drawn up, covering a large range of subjects (history, art, theology, law, institutions, philology, archaeology, art history, architecture, natural environment, restoration of art works, etc.).
