May 24 - September27,  2009

Over the course of the Second Thessaloniki Biennale of Contemporary Art, which had as its general theme “Action: Art in Uncertain Times”, 110 artists from Greece and abroad (there were 56 group and individual projects) presented their works as a part of the main program.  In the program of exhibits an array of “pre-biennale” exhibits, parallel exhibits, plans were also included, along with special educational programs for children and adults, workshops, and other productions.  There were also a special website and publications for the event.

The overseeing committee was comprised of the following members:  Bisi Silva, Gabriela Salgado and Siragous Chiara.  Assistants were Domna Gounari and Aretis Leopoulos.

The work of the artists was presented in the following places:  Warehouse Γ, Warehouse 13,  The old building of refrigeration and pumping at the Port of Thessaloniki, Outdoor locations at the port, Bezesteni, MIET Bookstore, Hamam Bazaar (Louloudakia), Bay Hamam (Traditional Baths), The Terrace of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, The outer gates of the Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki, The Mount Athos Center (Nedelko Mansion), Outdoor locations in the city, Bar-restaurants, .ES, Olympian-Film Festival of Thessaloniki.

The overseers Bisi Silva, Gabriela Salgado and Sirago Chiaria stated: “The second biennale came about as an opportunity to journey through the center of Thessaloniki.  The point of departure was the Port and headed toward the Historical and Commercial center of the city, integrating Ottoman monuments, squares, as well as both the basic and changing elements of the center in its path.  In essence, it was designed as an invitation for us to see the complex structures of the modern city, and its layers of culture, from a different vantage point.

It was an ambitious project that did not seek to replicate the stereotypical nature of other large international events.  It was a multi-dimensional program which we organized, favoring the whole as a method of logistics.
Artists of different generations and varying degrees of popularity and even celebrity came together through their work in a creative dialogue, in an open platform of communication.  Their work, as well as the quality, the maturity and the sincerity of their intentions met our selection criteria, without having to make final decisions.
Through the vantage point of the artists we sought to find alternative ways of defining our complex era, to call into question the deadlock of the importance of our times and to re-define the meaning of artistic action.”
