21 March – 8 April 2022

The Mount Athos Center in Thessaloniki, in collaboration with the Municipality of Veliko Tarnovo, the Centre of Greek Language and Culture of the St. Cyril and St. Methodius University, the Chilandar Monastery Foundation and the artistic non-profit organization ‘Eikona’, presents the group exhibition entitled ‘The Athonite St. Savvas of Chilandar: Modern Artistic Representations’ at Veliko Tarnovo in Bulgaria.
The exhibition will be held in the ‘Rafael Mihaylov’ exhibition space from Monday 21 March until Monday 4 April 2022.

The exhibition presents the work of contemporary icon-painters and artists on the subject of St. Savvas of Chilandar (1176-1235/6), the founder – together with his father Symeon – of the Holy Monastery of Chilandar on Mount Athos and the first archbishop of the autocephalous Church of Serbia.
Veliko Tarnovo, where the exhibition is being held, is the capital of the homonymous province and was historically the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is also the resting-place of St. Savvas and the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs contains his cenotaph as his coffin was burnt by the Ottomans. In fact, the historic picture by Aleksandar Deroko depicting this event is displayed in the exhibition.

Also, the exhibition is being staged as part of the programme of cultural and religious events that will take place in Veliko Tarnovo to mark the feast day of the Church of the Holy Forty Martyrs (22 March, Old Calendar).

The exhibiition was first presented in Thessaloniki in the exhibition space of the Mount Athos Center and, after being transferred to Belgrade, has now been brought to Bulgaria.
