The 8th Scientific Conference of the Mount Athos Center, with its 37 conference papers and one round table, constituted the first attempt to adopt a composite approach to the phenomenon of scholarship on Mount Athos.

The five thematic units of the conference, which served as a basis for the fullest possible approach to, and study of, the subject, were defined by the Conference Scientific Committee as follows:

  • Scholarship on Byzantine Athos: agencies and currents
  • Athonite scholars and libraries on Mount Athos: a two-way relationship
  • Mount Athos: a cradle of scholarship during the period of Turkish rule
  • Scholarship and art on Mount Athos
  • Scholarship on Mount Athos in the most recent period of its history (19th-early 20th centuries)

The round table, which was moderated by Mr. Kriton Chryssochoidis, Director of the Institute for Byzantine Research at the Hellenic National Research Foundation, was on the theme ‘Spiritual currents, the Modern Greek Enlightenment and Scholarship on Mount Athos’.
The main paper of the conference, presented by Mr. Kriton Chryssochoidis, was on the theme ‘Athonite Scholarship (10th-19th Centuries): Attempt at an Historical Outline’.
The conference proceedings commenced at 1 p.m. on Friday 22 November and continued on Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 November 2013 in the Conference Hall of the Thessaloniki Central Municipal Library (Ethnikis Amynis 27).
On Sunday, before the final session, the conference speakers and organisers attended the Divine Liturgy at the Holy Patriarchal and Stavropegic Monastery of Vlatadon.
