For Nikos Gabriel Pentzikis Mount Athos was a place of mystical and interior contemplation. He made 94 visits to the Holy Mountain in his lifetime and his interaction with Athonite monks shaped his thinking, writing and painting.

The exhibition focuses on the Notebook of his visit to Mount Athos in the summer of 1952. Drawings, notes on monks, saints, frescoes, flora and fauna reveal this interactive process.

The exhibition also presents a selection of the artist’s work related to Athonite and ecclesiastical themes which help trace how the artist evolved through the years and archive material from the Pentzikis Pharmacy and the artist’s second one-man-show (December 1952) which included paintings inspired by this particular visit.
