The exhibition of painting by Giorgos Taxidis entitled ‘Mount Athos: Land of Silence’, staged as part of the 2026 Theomitorika Festival, was officially opened with great success on Saturday 1 August 2026 in the central hall of the General State Archives/Historical Archive – Museum of Hydra.   

 

 

The exhibition, which has been jointly organised by the Mount Athos Center in Thessaloniki, the Historical Archive – Museum of Hydra and the local Cathedral Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, presents works by the artist Giorgos Taxidis in pencil, charcoal, oil and watercolour inspired by visits he made to Mount Athos during the period 2020-2025.     

A welcome address was given by the Director of the General State Archives/Historical Archive – Museum of Hydra, Mrs. Dina Adamopoulou, who stressed the connection between Hydra and Mount Athos in terms of their common Orthodox faith and Christian tradition. Addresses were also given by various representatives of the Church and state, while the Director of the Mount Athos Center, Mr. Anastasios Douros, underlined the importance of the presentation of the exhibition in Hydra.

 

The painter Giorgos Taxidis talked about his experiences during his visits to Mount Athos and gave members of the public a guided tour of his works. Later, on the terrace roof of the Museum, there was a public screening of the documentary by Nikos Anagnostopoulos documenting the artist’s visits to Mount Athos.  

The opening ceremony was attended by members of the clergy, representatives of the local authorities and other organisations, other local people and visitors. The exhibition will run until the end of August.
