4-7 December 2025, Museum of Byzantine Culture

As part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the Mount Athos Center is organising its 12th International Scientific Conference on the theme ‘Mount Athos and Thessaloniki through the Centuries’, which will be held from 4-7 December 2025 in the ‘Stephanos Dragoumis’ Auditorium at the Byzantine Museum of Culture.

As noted by the Scientific Committee, ‘The aim of the scientific contributions to the conference is to shed light on some of the most important aspects of the relationship between Mount Athos and Thessaloniki. For example, the conference will set out to enrich our knowledge of the relations between Mount Athos and the secular and ecclesiastical authorities of Thessaloniki through the centuries, as well as Athos’s relations with the city’s social, economic and commercial life. The conference papers will also examine theological movements, and the hagiographical connections and interplay of architectural and artistic influences between Mount Athos and Thessaloniki. In order to highlight the strong spiritual bonds between the two places, the conference will begin with a round table on the special theme of the emblematic figure of St. Gregory Palamas and his relationship with Mount Athos.’
Within the framework of the conference, a facsimile edition has been produced of the rare work Mount Athos and Its Monasteries (1924) by the British archaeologist, historian and researcher of the British School at Athens Frederick William Hasluck (1878–1920). This book is the ninth publication in the series Athonika Analekta produced by the Mount Athos Center and includes an introduction by Athanasios Semoglou, Professor of Byzantine Archaeology and Art in the School of History and Archaeology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki.
