Nea Tenedos

(October-November 2007)

In October of 2007 the exhibit “Athos-Beyond the limits of time" moved to the village of Nea Tenedos in Chalkidiki, where it was presented at the Cultural Center in cooperation with the Cultural Association of Citizens of Tenedos from Around the World “The Public of Tenedos”.

The Exhibit is comprised of photographs of Elder Gabriel Philotheitou, member of the Monastic Brotherhood of the Holy Monastery Philotheou on the Holy Mountain.

The Elder, during his service at the Monastery, occupied himself at the beginning with wood carving, creating works of ecclesiastical art.  In an effort to illustrate and archive these works he began his work in photography and, in short time, the surrounding environment, the faces and, in reality, the life of the Holy Mountain drove him to turn “toward his lens”, capturing with persistence, patience and ingenuity, snapshots from the life of the one-of-a-kind place.

No easy task, especially as it concerned the tolerance of the environment, it presented, among other things, an opportunity to demonstrate works of modern “tasks of service”, which take place on the Holy Mountain.  Works of exceptional skill and sensitivity, they enlighten another wrinkle of the monastic life on the Holy Mountain in our times.
